Journalists for Human Rights(JHR) is a leading Canadian media development organization with experience in over 29 countries worldwide. JHR’s mission is to empower journalists to cover human rights issues more effectively and ethically for the benefit of their communities.
JHR has trained over 15,650 journalists in Canada, the Middle-East and Africa and worked with more than 400 media organizations. Reports produced by JHR trained journalists have reached over 65 million people worldwide.
Since February 2016, JHR has been implementing the project “Strengthening Media in South Sudan” in order to enhance public accountability on human rights issues in the country and strengthen the capacities of the media and media institutions to promote effective, inclusive and transparent governance in South Sudan.
Working with media outlets, media organizations, civil society organizations, international organizations, and government representatives, the project aims to enhance the capacity of these key players by:
Training and mentoring journalists, journalism students editors and media managers on covering the issues of human rights, especially the rights of women and girls. The goal is to improve media professionals’ knowledge and skills on gender-sensitive and human rights reporting and to increase newsrooms support of gender inclusive policies.
Training and mentoring civil society organizations especially women rights organization, on collaborating with media and improving their skills on structuring media communication strategies.The goal is to improve information sharing between civil society organizations and media in order to amplify human rights and good governance issues.
Working with government representatives on communicating with the media and on human rights issues in order to build bridges between the government, civil society and media to better understand the role of each sector in public life.
Engaging the public through open forums (live and on-air) on the issues of human rights in order to promote transparent and open dialogue on such topic and to strengthen accountability.
